Sustainability and climate change

In 2022 the Regional Institute for Statistics ASTAT launched the ASTAT panel "So denkt Südtirol / Così pensa l’Alto Adige", offering a new opportunity for accessing statistical data on various topics at short notice. This initiative also marked the first collaboration between ASTAT and the Center for Advanced Studies at Eurac Research. Meanwhile, two surveys have been successfully conducted.

The survey on "Climate Change and Sustainability" was conducted on the basis of a random sample and therefore allows conclusions to be drawn about the population as a whole. About 1,300 citizens of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol were asked in June 2022 about their assessments, views and behaviours with regard to climate change, climate protection and sustainability.

In the summer of 2023, the collaboration continued with a new phase. Two additional aspects of the climate crisis were examined through a survey: emotions and inequalities. These areas are crucial in the socio-political response to the climate crisis but have been overlooked in South Tyrol until now. This study aims to understand the emotional responses of people in South Tyrol to climate change and its impacts, as well as the social tensions and conflicts arising from it. Since the survey was conducted using a random sample with 1,028 citizens, the results provide insights applicable to the entire population of South Tyrol. The results will be presented in June 2024.
